JOSE FAHRNI
BIOLOGIST

FAHRNI JF : SHORT PRESENTATION

My name is José François Fahrni.
Born in 1946, I am 73 years old, biologist, retired.

I have defended my PhD in 1977, in Lausanne University (Switzerland), on :
The life cycle and ultrastructure of Spirochona gemmipara, a ciliate Protozoan epibiont on the gills of Gammarus pulex.
I published 3 papers on this subject in the 80′.

Then, I went to Geneva University, first in de Haller’s lab, then in Pawlowski’s lab, where I have worked in molecular systematics, on several protists including amoebas, foraminifera and Reticulomyxa,
I had to retire in 2011.

A SECOND LIFE

I began a second life in autumn 2016 whenDenis Lynn(Vancouver University, Canada) contacted me. He was looking for swiss spirochones, in view to extend his molecular systematic work about chonotrichs Ciliates (see Lynn, 2016).

I have sent swiss spirochones samples to Canada in 2016-2017 ; Denis has done the job and filed the SSU S. gemmiparasequence in GenBank on 12.12.2016.

In august 2017, Denis and me meet together in Prague ; we developped a collaboration : a project on the molecular systematics of the Spirochonidae from Lake Baikal.

Tanks to Dr. Sherbakov (Irkutsk Limnological Institute), specialist of baikal amphipods, I could participate in a sampling cruise on the Baikal (12-21.07.2018). During this wonderful trip, I have collected about 150 various amphipods.

Very sadly, Denis Lynn accidentaly died on 26.06.2018.

On 29.10.2018, Prof. Jan Pawlowski (Geneva University), my previous boss, hosted me in his laboratory and encouraged me to do the molecular work myself.
